What do the abbreviations for trim levels of car models stand for? (GT, LS, LT. . . etc)? - ls models zshare

For example, I have a Mercury Grand Marquis LS. What does the "LS" actually represented. I know that's when you buy a Chevrolet, "LT" a greater level of adjustment than others. I know muscle cars with "GT" of the equipment with the largest engine and performance parts in general higher than the degree.
